Credit Card Fraud Alert and How to Save Yourself $37,231 Pt 2

If your credit card has been lost or stolen, you need to file a credit card fraud alert. Start by calling your credit card company and getting your card cancelled. They will arrange to send you a new card and also send you the correct forms for filing a fraud alert.

Fill the forms out promptly and get them sent in in a timely manner. The longer you wait the worse the situation can get. Like I said, it doesn’t matter if the card was lost or stolen, the result can be the same. If you have only lost your card and someone finds it, they can use it fraudulently and get you in all kinds of trouble and essentially make your life a living hell until you get everything straightened out. If it was stolen, you will have the same problem. Report the loss or theft as soon as you can and get the credit card fraud alert filed. You will be glad you did.

When calling the credit bureaus remember you will only need to inform one of them, the one you report to will contact the other two for you. Filing a fraud alert with the credit bureaus allows them to advise your creditor that you may be a victim of identity theft. If someone then tries to get more credit the credit bureau should contact you to verify that it is you who is doing the asking and not the identity thief.

The initial fraud alert will stay on file for 90 days from the time you file. The 90 day fraud alert is used if you suspect that you may be the victim of identity theft or could become one. So, use this fraud alert if your credit card gets lost or there is a possibility that it was stolen or you suspect some of your mail has been stolen but you really have no proof that any theft has really occurred. 90 days is long enough to ferret out any would be identity thief. Always file a police report, just in case.

The other type of fraud alert is called an Extended Fraud Alert and last for seven years. You file an extended fraud alert in the same manner as the 90 day variety with the difference being the credit bureaus require that you also file an identity theft report. This is where the police report comes in handy as you will need a copy of the police report to file along with the form from the credit bureau.

I had a scare at the beginning of this year. All of a sudden I had stopped receiving my check stubs in the mail and then did not receive my W-2′s for taxes. When I went in to the main office of my job and asked about it they gave me the login information to get my check stubs online. That is when I noticed that the address on my check stubs was incorrect and they were going to some place in a whole other state. I filed a police report just in case something ever came of it. Nothing did, though, to my relief.

This just goes to show that you cannot be too careful and although this was not a credit card, if you lose you credit card or it gets stolen, it is very important to file a credit card fraud alert.

In this personal finance article series we will deviate from the norm. Many times, if you visit other finance blogs, you get a lot off fluff and filler. Not so here. In fact, this is one of our most popular articles because it gives straight money advice without having to take a personal finance class to understand what is being said.

With that in mind, lets talk about the mega-popular topic of credit card fraud. Don’t make the mistake of overlooking this. Pretending that credit card fraud won’t happen to you is the worste thing you can do. It is far better to prepare and take action in the event that it does happen to you.

Before we dive in, let me tell you a true story. My wife and I have maintained grade A credit since we got out of college. But one day, we got a notice from a credit card company. They wondered if we’d been on vacation. No we had not.

Then two days later, another statement arrived. To our surprise, some crook had taken a shopping trip along the Eastern United States seaboard. They proceeded to go from New Jersey, to North Carolina, along the coast all they way down to Florida.

They had interesting taste too. Pep Shop Boys, Mickey Schorres, outlet malls, Victorias Secret, etc.

The total bill came to $37,231 bucks.

The moral of our story, is don’t think that credit card fraud can happen to you is the perfect financial storm the scammers want you to be in.

If your credit card has been lost or stolen, you need to file a credit card fraud alert. Start by calling your credit card company and getting your card cancelled. They will arrange to send you a new card and also send you the correct forms for filing a fraud alert.

Money Matters 101 – Free Financial Advice Can Be Deadly

Money Matters 101 – Free Financial Advice Can Be Deadly

In the Richest Man in Babylon, author George Clason’s principal character utters profound advice for his young protege Achrod. He says in essence, personal financial advice must be worth keeping. This was true then and it is true of the times we live in now.

These are tough times with the recent recession many people worldwide are struggling financially.  Because there are so many people struggling financially, there are also more people seeking help from professionals.  If you are looking for free financial advice then you might find this article helpful.

I’m sure you’ve heard the saying “you get what you pay for” well it is true in many aspects of life and it can also be true when seeking financial advice.  But then again you can pay for advice and still receive bad advice, so it isn’t necessarily just because it’s free that it’s bad.  You always need to keep your mind open with free financial advice or paid advice and if something doesn’t feel right then walk away.

When seeking advice from a financial planner you always want to check their credentials. This is the case whether you are receiving free or paid advice.  Even with paid financial advisers you may receive advice, that although is good advice, might not be suitable to your needs.

A financial planner is working for you and should have your best interests in mind.  If you feel that an adviser doesn’t have your best interest in mind, but rather just wants to make a sale (generate a commission), then you should move on and find another adviser.  It is advisable to speak to more than one adviser anyway so you can get some different opinions and then decide which is best for you.

Let’s take a look at some places that you might go to find some financial planning help.

1. Your local bank or credit union is always a good place to start.  Many banks or credit unions offer financial planning services although they might not all offer free services.  If they don’t think that they can be of assistance to you they might be able to recommend a financial planner who can help you.

2. Talk to your friends or family.  Word of mouth is how many people find good financial planners because if someone is happy with the service they have received then they are more likely to recommend them.  If you talk to your family and friends, you never know, one of them might have a good advisor that they could recommend.  Word of mouth also works the other way around, and if someone has had a bad experience then they can advise you to avoid that particular financial planning agency.

3. Your local paper or phone book should have financial planners in your area.  Your phone book will have listings of financial planning businesses and your local paper may have advertisements that could possibly include advertisements for free financial advice.  Just be careful as often the free financial advice advertisers often give free advice in the lead up to a sales pitch.

4. You can also look online to find a financial planner.  When looking online just be cautious as you never know who you are dealing with.  You want to ask about all fees that are required to make sure that you aren’t hit with any hidden fees later on.  When looking online you will also want to be careful as to how much personal information you give.

When looking for a financial planner it is best to find someone locally as a good adviser could be working for you for a long time in the future.  You don’t want to travel too far every time you go for a visit to your financial planner.

You can always check the reputation of a financial planning company through your local Better Business Bureau, this way you will know if they have had any complaints or if they are a reputable business.

Unfortunately, in all walks of life there are scammers around that will try to take advantage of you.  When looking for free financial advice you need to keep this in mind and make sure that your free advice isn’t leading to some sort of scam.  If it doesn’t feel right then it probably isn’t and you should just walk away.  Don’t let anyone pressure you into anything, only ever sign up to anything if you feel comfortable with it.

Let me know your thoughts in the comments section below. I’d like to know if you’ve had any experience with free personal financial advise. Was it any good? Was it a waste of money? Please share below. Thanks.
